What the Sun represents
The Sun is the centre of the chart in the same way it is the centre of the solar system: everything else orbits it. Astrologers read it as your core identity, the vital energy you run on and the qualities you feel most yourself when expressing. It is the placement most people already know, since the Sun sign is the one magazine columns use, and it usually needs only a date of birth. Yet the Sun is less a fixed personality than a direction of growth, the self you keep becoming as you make choices, take credit and find what genuinely energises you.
By sign, the Sun describes the style of that identity: what you value in yourself and what kind of recognition feels nourishing. By house, it shows the area of life where you most want to shine, the part of the world where being seen and doing well matters most. Whole sign houses need a birth time and place, so the Sun's house adds detail that the sign alone cannot, turning a broad identity into a specific arena.
The Sun in love, work and daily life
In love, the Sun describes what you need to feel appreciated as yourself rather than only as a partner, and how you share the spotlight. People often recognise a partner's Sun in their generosity, pride and what they want to be admired for. At work, it tends to describe leadership style, the kind of goal that keeps you motivated and how you handle credit, praise and visibility. In daily life the Sun shows up in what restores your energy and what drains it: some people recharge by performing, others by finishing something on their own terms. When the Sun is well expressed, people often seem lit from within. When it is blocked, the result can be a dull sense of going through the motions, which is worth noticing rather than judging.
In relationships the Sun shows what a person needs to be seen for: the part of themselves they want a partner to recognise, admire and leave room for. A bond that ignores it tends to feel quietly diminishing, however kind it is. At work the Sun points to where effort feels like self-expression rather than duty, and to the kind of role in which recognition actually means something. It is less about the job title than about whether the work feels like theirs.
The Sun through the signs
Traditionally the Sun rules Leo, is exalted in Aries, is in detriment in Aquarius and in its fall in Libra. The Sun spends about a month in a sign.
In Aries: courage, initiative and a need to go first. In Taurus: patience, loyalty and a love of comfort and beauty. In Gemini: curiosity, wit and a restless, sociable mind. In Cancer: care, memory and a strong instinct to protect. In Leo: warmth, pride and a generous need to shine. In Virgo: skill, service and an eye for what could be better. In Libra: fairness, charm and a talent for partnership. In Scorpio: depth, loyalty and an all-or-nothing intensity. In Sagittarius: optimism, candour and a hunger for meaning. In Capricorn: ambition, discipline and a long view of success. In Aquarius: independence, ideals and a mind of its own. In Pisces: empathy, imagination and porous boundaries. Each Sun sign has its own page in the zodiac guide, with its dates, decans, compatibility and the Life Path and Chinese zodiac combinations.
The Sun through the houses
Where the Sun falls by house shows the part of life where a person most wants to shine, feels most alive and is most likely to put their energy, especially as they mature. In whole sign houses, the Sun is in the house of whichever sign it occupies, counted from the rising sign.
In the 1st: a sense of self that walks in first and is noticed before it speaks. In the 2nd: identity built through what you make, keep and quietly value. In the 3rd: a self that comes alive through talk, ideas and everyday curiosity. In the 4th: an identity rooted in home, family history and a private inner base. In the 5th: a self that shines through play, romance and making things for joy. In the 6th: identity found in being useful, skilled and quietly reliable day to day. In the 7th: a self discovered through partnership, collaboration and the people opposite. In the 8th: identity forged in depth, trust, shared resources and personal change. In the 9th: a self that grows by travelling, learning and seeking meaning. In the 10th: identity tied to vocation, reputation and building something visible. In the 11th: a self expressed through friendship, community and shared hopes. In the 12th: a quiet, inward self that recharges in solitude and works behind the scenes.
Working with the Sun in your chart
The Sun is the centre of a birth chart: the core identity, the will and the kind of life that feels worth living. A birth date settles it, except on the day the Sun changes sign.
Notice the moments when you feel unmistakably alive: perhaps leading a project, telling a story, solving a puzzle or helping someone else succeed. Those flashes are clues. Reflection questions for the Sun: what do I want recognition for, and from whom? When did I last make a choice purely because it felt true to me? Where do I dim myself to keep others comfortable? Practical ways to work with it include setting one goal that reflects your values rather than obligations, celebrating small wins openly, and spending time outdoors in daylight when your spirits sag. Try finishing the sentence I am someone who in a dozen different ways, then circle the endings that ring true. Confidence grows sturdier when it rests on self-respect rather than applause, so practise acknowledging your efforts quietly as well.

Frequently asked questions
Why do I not feel like my Sun sign?
The Sun is one voice among many. A strong Moon, rising sign or a crowded house elsewhere can easily outweigh it in day to day behaviour. The Sun also describes who you are growing into, so many people find it fits better later on, once they have more room to choose.
Is the Sun more important than the Moon?
Not more important, just different. The Sun describes purpose and conscious identity, what you aim towards. The Moon describes needs, moods and instinctive reactions, what you fall back on. Most astrologers read them as a pair, and much of personality lives in how well the two cooperate.
Which signs does the Sun rule?
In the traditional scheme the Sun rules Leo. A planet in a sign it rules is said to be at home, or in its domicile.
