In Western astrology, December 23 is a cusp birthday: depending on the year, time and place of birth, the Sun is in Sagittarius or Capricorn. In numerology the day gives birthday number 5, while the Life Path also depends on the birth year. Many people born on cusp dates recognise something of both signs.

The December 23 birthday in astrology
Late December's festive bustle suits the 23rd. Depending on birth year and time, the Sun is in the final degree of Sagittarius or the first degrees of Capricorn; in most years it is Capricorn, in the Saturn-ruled first decan. Twenty-three reduces to 5, so the blend mixes discipline with curiosity: a practical planner who still loves surprises.
Astronomically, December 23 puts the Sun near 1° Capricorn in most years, inside the first ten-degree slice of the sign, which tradition links with Saturn. Birthdays around December 20 to December 22 fall on the Sagittarius–Capricorn cusp, near the December solstice. Mutable fire meets cardinal earth, and optimism meets ambition. Which sign the Sun was actually in depends on the year, time and birthplace, as the moment of ingress varies; a chart for your exact details is the way to confirm it. Those who carry both energies are often described as visionaries with a plan, people who dream large and then build methodically. They may swing between restlessness and serious focus, and both modes tend to serve them.

Season, Chinese zodiac and famous December 23 birthdays
December birthdays arrive at the start of northern winter, around the shortest days and the year's festivities, and at the start of summer in the southern hemisphere. Sagittarius holds most of the month, with Capricorn beginning around December 21 or 22. In numerology December is month 12, which reduces to 3: expression and sociability, built from the 1 and 2 of initiative and partnership. December 23 is the 357th day of the year (358th in a leap year). Counting forward, the next sign change, into Aquarius, is usually complete within 29 days, by January 21.
By December 23 the Chinese new year is well under way, which means the animal and element are those of the calendar birth year. Among the best-known people with a December 23 birthday are Akihito (1933), Alexander I of Russia (1777) and Helmut Schmidt (1918).
