Aries is cardinal and fire. ## Key facts | Fact | Value | | --- | --- | | Sun sign | Aries in every year from 1930 to 2030 | | Decan | Aries decan 1 (Mars) | | Sun's position at noon UTC | About 2° Aries | | Aries · element · modality · ruler | Fire · Cardinal · Mars | | Birthday number | 23 → 5 | | Life Path by birth year | 1960: 6 · 1970: 7 · 1980: 8 · 1990: 9 · 2000: 1 · 2010: 11 · 2020: 3 | | Chinese zodiac | After Lunar New Year, so the animal is the birth year's own | | Born on this day | Akira Kurosawa (1910), Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749), Wernher von Braun (1912) | ## The March 23 birthday in astrology With the Sun about two degrees into Aries, March 23 sits firmly in the Mars-ruled first decan. Twenty-three reduces to 5, the number of change and freedom. The combination is traditionally fast: quick decisions, quick enthusiasm, quick boredom. The best of it is described as a fearless experimenter who keeps trying new approaches. Astronomically, March 23 puts the Sun near 2° Aries in most years, inside the first ten-degree slice of the sign, which tradition links with Mars. The opening stretch of Aries, from 0 to 9 degrees, is often called the purest expression of the sign, because Mars governs Aries and also acts as sub-ruler here. Astrologers traditionally picture this decan as the spark at the very start of the zodiac: quick to move, frank in speech and happiest with something to push against. The doubled Mars emphasis tends to sharpen courage and an appetite for challenge, and it can also shorten patience with slow processes. Many of these Rams recognise the urge to start before the plan is finished. Their growing edge is usually learning that a pause is not the same as a defeat. ## Birthday number and Life Path for March 23 Born on the 23rd, you have a compound of 2 + 3 = 5. The 2 brings sensitivity and the 3 brings expression, and the 5 that results is curious, social and quick on its feet. People born on the 23rd are often described as excellent communicators with a gift for reading people and a strong appetite for new experiences. Travel, languages and varied work tend to appeal. Among the day numbers, the 23 is traditionally seen as one of the most adaptable. Commitment can feel restrictive, so choosing carefully what to say yes to helps them keep their freedom meaningful. Add the birth year and the picture shifts again: a March 23 birthday gives Life Path 9 for 1990, 1 for 2000, 11 for 2010 and 3 for 2020. Some birth years on this date reach the master number 11. Read the birthday number as a secondary note beside that main theme. ## Season, Chinese zodiac and famous March 23 birthdays A March birthday falls around the spring equinox for the northern hemisphere, the season of thaw and first growth, while southern birthdays mark the turn into autumn. The month is split between Pisces and Aries, with the change around March 20 or 21. In numerology March is month 3, linked with expression, creativity and sociability, a lively number for a month that ends with the zodiac starting over. March 23 is the 82nd day of the year (83rd in a leap year). Counting forward, the next sign change, into Taurus, is usually complete within 28 days, by April 20. By March 23 the Chinese new year is well under way, which means the animal and element are those of the calendar birth year. Among the best-known people with a March 23 birthday are Akira Kurosawa (1910), Pierre-Simon Laplace (1749) and Wernher von Braun (1912). ## Frequently asked questions ### What zodiac sign is March 23?
