It is traditionally associated with gentleness, creativity and empathy. Your animal follows the Lunar New Year of your birth, so early-year birthdays can belong to the previous animal. ## Key facts | Fact | Value | | --- | --- | | Position in the cycle | 8 of 12 (earthly branch Wei) | | Fixed element · polarity | Earth · Yin | | Years (each starts at Lunar New Year) | 1955 Wood (from Jan 24); 1967 Fire (from Feb 9); 1979 Earth (from Jan 28); 1991 Metal (from Feb 15); 2003 Water (from Feb 1); 2015 Wood (from Feb 19); 2027 Fire (from Feb 6) | | San He trine | Rabbit, Goat, Pig (Wood) | | Liu He · Liu Chong · Liu Hai | Horse · Ox · Rat | ## The Goat in Chinese astrology The Goat is the eighth animal of the cycle, and the same character is also translated as Sheep or Ram. It is usually described as gentle, creative and compassionate. Its branch, Wei, is linked with late summer, and its fixed element is Earth. People born in Goat years are often portrayed as artistic, kind and sensitive, with a rich inner life and a love of beauty and comfort. The Goat is associated with harmony and with a preference for cooperation over competition. Descriptions also mention worry, indecision and a need for reassurance. Many readings present the Goat as someone who flourishes in a supportive environment and who brings warmth and imagination to the people and places around it. Many readers recognise the Goat in a gift for creating atmosphere, whether through decorating a room, cooking a meal or simply listening well. As a Yin animal, its strength is receptive and nurturing, and it often senses how others are feeling before they say so. ## The Goat at work At work, the Goat is often described as creative, considerate and good at collaborative work. The arts, design, music, writing, care professions, gardening and hospitality are commonly mentioned, along with roles that value imagination and empathy. A Goat tends to work best when it feels supported and appreciated. The traditional caution is vulnerability to pressure: a Goat may struggle in harsh, competitive environments or find it hard to make decisions without encouragement. Readings often suggest that people born in Goat years seek out teams with a kind culture and clear structure, and that they build confidence by finishing creative work regularly and letting it be seen rather than holding it back until it feels perfect. A Goat also tends to do well with a mentor or manager who offers encouragement and clear direction. Recognition matters to it, not for status but as reassurance that its contribution is valued, and that reassurance often unlocks its most original work. ## The Goat in relationships In relationships, the Goat is usually described as affectionate, devoted and romantic, with a deep need for emotional security. A Goat often expresses love through care, creativity and attention to a partner's comfort. Its classical allies are its San He partners, the Rabbit and the Pig, and its Liu He secret friend, the Horse, while the Ox sits opposite it in the six clashes. The common relationship friction is dependence or moodiness: a Goat may rely heavily on a partner for reassurance or withdraw when it feels criticised. Partners who are steady, gentle and encouraging tend to help a Goat feel secure, which allows its warmth and imagination to come forward. Friendships with a Goat are often tender and loyal. It tends to be thoughtful with gifts and generous with time, and it values friends who are kind and patient in return. A Goat often keeps friendships for many years and may be the one who remembers shared history most vividly. ## Years of the Goat and their elements Recent and upcoming years of the Goat are 1967 (Fire), 1979 (Earth), 1991 (Metal), 2003 (Water), 2015 (Wood) and 2027 (Fire). Each begins at Lunar New Year rather than on January 1, so people born in January or early February need to check the date: in 1967, for example, the Goat year began on February 9, and anyone born before that is a Fire Horse. The element attached to each year comes from the ten-year cycle of heavenly stems, so a Fire Goat and a Earth Goat share the animal's core character but differ in flavour. Separately, the Goat always carries Earth as its fixed element and a Yin polarity, which describe the animal itself. Because the five stem elements and twelve animals line up again only every sixty years, the Metal Goat of 1991 returns in 2051. The Chinese zodiac calculator on this site applies the Lunar New Year table from 1924 to 2044 automatically. ## Growth edges for the Goat The growth edge for the Goat usually involves confidence and self-reliance. Traditional descriptions mention worry, indecision, sensitivity to criticism and a tendency to avoid conflict. A Goat may also wait for others to take the lead rather than trusting its own judgment. Practices that tend to help include making small decisions independently, sharing creative work before it feels finished, and developing routines that provide security from within. The Goat's gift is gentleness and imagination, the ability to create beauty and comfort for others. It tends to grow when that gentleness is joined by a stronger sense of its own voice, so that kindness becomes a strength rather than a reason to stay quiet. In a Unified Reading, the Goat often adds a note of gentleness and imagination to the wider profile, softening a driven Life Path or Sun sign, or deepening the creativity of an expressive one. For anyone born in a Goat year, these growth notes are prompts for reflection rather than fixed traits. ## Goat compatibility with every animal - [Rat and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/rat-and-goat) - [Ox and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/ox-and-goat) - [Tiger and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/tiger-and-goat) - [Rabbit and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/rabbit-and-goat) - [Dragon and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/dragon-and-goat) - [Snake and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/snake-and-goat) - [Horse and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/horse-and-goat) - [Goat and Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/goat-and-goat) - [Goat and Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/goat-and-monkey) - [Goat and Rooster](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/goat-and-rooster) - [Goat and Dog](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/goat-and-dog) - [Goat and Pig](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/goat-and-pig) ## Frequently asked questions ### Is it the Year of the Goat or the Sheep?
