It combines the Horse's energy with Metal's qualities. Metal Horse years between 1924 and 2044 are 1930 and 1990. The Horse's fixed element is Fire. ## Key facts | Fact | Value | | --- | --- | | Year element · animal · polarity | Metal · Horse · Yang | | Stem-branch name | Geng-Wu | | Years (each starts at Lunar New Year) | 1930 (Jan 30, 1930 – Feb 16, 1931); 1990 (Jan 27, 1990 – Feb 14, 1991) | | Horse's fixed element | Fire · Fire controls Metal | | San He trine | Tiger, Horse, Dog (Fire) | | Liu He · Liu Chong · Liu Hai | Goat · Rat · Ox | ## The Metal Horse personality The Horse always carries Fire, and Fire controls Metal, so a Metal year sets the Horse to work on a hard, resistant stem. Readings describe the outcome as a Horse with unusual tenacity: strong-willed, ambitious and fiercely independent, its free spirit forged into firm purpose. Metal Horses are often portrayed as determined, quick-thinking and hard to discourage, with a love of challenge and a dislike of being told what to do. They tend to be candid and can be inspiring leaders when they believe in a cause. The effort of mastering Metal can also make them stubborn and restless at once, and their independence may tip into impatience with any form of authority or compromise. Belonging to the west and to the clear, cool air of autumn, Metal adds edge, resolve and structure to any sign it colours. Classical texts connect it with righteousness, strength of will and the ability to see a situation without sentiment. A Metal stem often makes an animal more ambitious, more organised and more self-contained than usual. People born in Metal years are frequently described as loyal to their word and tireless once committed. The caution most readings add is a hardness that can isolate them, along with perfectionism and a reluctance to admit doubt or ask for help. ## Metal Horse at work and in love At work, Metal is usually linked with discipline, precision and principled leadership. Metal-year people are often described as the ones who set standards, cut through confusion and finish what they start, which suits law, engineering, finance, surgery, editing and any role that values exactness. They tend to work well alone and lead by example. The traditional caution is inflexibility: a Metal stem can dismiss ideas that arrive untidily, so practising curiosity before judgement usually makes them better leaders. Independent and determined, the Metal Horse wants to steer its own course at work. Freelancing, competitive sport, engineering, investment and business ownership are typical fits, because self-direction and stamina count for a great deal. It sets ambitious goals and dislikes interference, so a manager who defines outcomes and then steps back usually gets its best effort. In love, the Metal Horse is ardent and loyal on its own terms, drawn to strong-willed partners who keep their own interests. It needs independence within the relationship and straight talk. The usual friction is stubbornness: it may decide alone and then defend the decision, and the other person can feel that togetherness is negotiable rather than given. ## Metal Horse years and dates Between 1924 and 2044 the Metal Horse years are 1930 (January 30, 1930 to February 16, 1931) and 1990 (January 27, 1990 to February 14, 1991). Because the year begins at Lunar New Year, a birthday in January or early February needs checking: in 1930 anyone born before Jan 30 is a Earth Snake, not a Metal Horse. The combination returns every sixty years, since five elements cycle through twelve animals and only meet the same pairing again after five rounds of the zodiac. Every Metal Horse year is Yang, matching the Horse's own polarity. Chinese almanacs call the combination Geng-Wu, joining the heavenly stem Geng to the earthly branch Wu. Births just before each new year fall in the Earth Snake year (before January 30, 1930) and the Earth Snake year (before January 27, 1990), and births in the weeks after each Metal Horse year ends belong to the Metal Goat. The new year itself fell on a Thursday in 1930 and Saturday in 1990. ## Growth edges and compatibility for the Metal Horse Metal Horses usually grow by learning when to yield. Not every limitation is an attack on their freedom, and treating some rules as tools rather than obstacles saves energy. Because they move fast and decide firmly, inviting feedback before final choices widens their view. Metal Horses may also find it hard to rest; physical outlets such as long-distance running, cycling or riding suit them and help discharge tension. In relationships, explaining their need for space prevents others from reading it as rejection. When determination is paired with flexibility, the Metal Horse becomes a resilient and admired trailblazer. For relationships, the classical structures belong to the animal rather than the element, so the Metal Horse shares the Horse's San He trine with the Tiger and Dog (the Fire trine), its Liu He bond with the Goat, and its Liu Chong clash with the Rat. The element adds a second layer: another Metal sign shares this year element, while partners whose year element feeds Metal in the generating cycle are often described as supportive. ## Metal Horse years - [1930 (Metal Horse)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/1930) - [1990 (Metal Horse)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/1990) ## Frequently asked questions ### What years are Metal Horse years? Between 1924 and 2044: 1930 (from January 30, 1930) and 1990 (from January 27, 1990). Each lasts until the day before the next Lunar New Year. ### What is the Metal Horse's element relationship? The year element is Metal and the Horse's fixed element is Fire; in the five-element cycles fire controls Metal. Readings use that relationship to describe how easily the two sides of the sign sit together. ### Which animals are most compatible with the Metal Horse? Traditionally the Tiger and Dog (San He) and the Goat (Liu He). The Rat is the Liu Chong clash. These pairings depend on the animal, whatever the element. ### What is the Metal Horse called in the Chinese calendar? Geng-Wu. In almanacs and Four Pillars charts each year is named by its heavenly stem, here the Metal stem Geng, followed by its earthly branch, here Wu for the Horse, so the name pins down both halves of the combination at once. ### How is the Metal Horse different from other Horses? All Horses share energy, freedom and warm enthusiasm. The Metal year element changes the tone: metal is the element of autumn and harvest, and a Metal year is traditionally said to sharpen whatever animal it meets. ## Related pages - [Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/horse) - [1930 (Metal Horse)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/1930) - [1990 (Metal Horse)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/1990) - [Water Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/water-horse) - [Wood Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/wood-horse) - [Fire Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/fire-horse) - [Earth Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/earth-horse) - [Metal Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/metal-goat) - [Metal Dragon](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/metal-dragon) - [Chinese zodiac years](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/years) - [Chinese zodiac calculator](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac-calculator) - [Horse and Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/horse-and-horse) ## About Unified Reading Unified Reading combines Pythagorean numerology, the Western Sun sign (Moon and rising with a birth time), the Chinese zodiac and life-stage context in one reading.
