It combines the Monkey's ingenuity with Metal's qualities. Metal Monkey years between 1924 and 2044 are 1980 and 2040. The Monkey's fixed element is Metal. ## Key facts | Fact | Value | | --- | --- | | Year element · animal · polarity | Metal · Monkey · Yang | | Stem-branch name | Geng-Shen | | Years (each starts at Lunar New Year) | 1980 (Feb 16, 1980 – Feb 4, 1981); 2040 (Feb 12, 2040 – Jan 31, 2041) | | Monkey's fixed element | Metal · Metal year element matches the fixed element | | San He trine | Rat, Dragon, Monkey (Water) | | Liu He · Liu Chong · Liu Hai | Snake · Tiger · Pig | ## The Metal Monkey personality Same element in both places: the Monkey's fixed element is Metal, so a Metal year concentrates its defining qualities. Readings picture a Monkey of formidable intelligence, confidence and drive, independent, strategic and capable of working long and hard on something that interests it. Metal Monkeys are often described as ambitious, organised and highly skilled, with a strong sense of their own worth. They tend to excel when given autonomy and challenging problems. Doubled Metal sharpens the Monkey's wit but can also harden its edges, and readings mention pride, a competitive streak, a reluctance to trust others with important tasks and an emotional reserve that keeps even close friends at a slight distance. Belonging to the west and to the clear, cool air of autumn, Metal adds edge, resolve and structure to any sign it colours. Classical texts connect it with righteousness, strength of will and the ability to see a situation without sentiment. A Metal stem often makes an animal more ambitious, more organised and more self-contained than usual. People born in Metal years are frequently described as loyal to their word and tireless once committed. The caution most readings add is a hardness that can isolate them, along with perfectionism and a reluctance to admit doubt or ask for help. ## Metal Monkey at work and in love At work, Metal is usually linked with discipline, precision and principled leadership. Metal-year people are often described as the ones who set standards, cut through confusion and finish what they start, which suits law, engineering, finance, surgery, editing and any role that values exactness. They tend to work well alone and lead by example. The traditional caution is inflexibility: a Metal stem can dismiss ideas that arrive untidily, so practising curiosity before judgement usually makes them better leaders. With Metal as both year element and fixed element, the Metal Monkey's cleverness gains discipline and ambition. Finance, law, engineering, competitive business and technical leadership are typical fits, since sharp analysis must produce results there. It sets demanding targets, works independently and can grow impatient with colleagues who need things explained twice. In love, the Metal Monkey is passionate and loyal once committed, though selective about whom it trusts and slow to reveal vulnerability. It needs intellectual equality and honesty. Self-reliance is the catch: it may solve problems alone and present the solution as finished, leaving a partner feeling like a spectator in decisions that affect both of them. ## Metal Monkey years and dates The table from 1924 to 2044 holds 2 Metal Monkey years: 1980, starting Feb 16 and 2040, starting Feb 12. Because the year begins at Lunar New Year, a birthday in January or early February needs checking: in 1980 anyone born before Feb 16 is a Earth Goat, not a Metal Monkey. It takes sixty years for the Metal stem and the Monkey branch to coincide again, which is why the same pairing marks grandparents and grandchildren rather than siblings. Every Metal Monkey year is Yang, matching the Monkey's own polarity. In the sexagenary calendar this is the Geng-Shen year, the Metal stem Geng with the Monkey's branch Shen. Births just before each new year fall in the Earth Goat year (before February 16, 1980) and the Earth Goat year (before February 12, 2040), and births in the weeks after each Metal Monkey year ends belong to the Metal Rooster. The new year itself fell on a Saturday in 1980 and Sunday in 2040. ## Growth edges and compatibility for the Metal Monkey Warmth and collaboration are the areas where Metal Monkeys usually have most to gain. Sharing credit generously and admitting when they need help builds trust they cannot win through competence alone. They may also benefit from slowing down to consider how decisions affect others emotionally, not just practically. Creative play, humour and spontaneous adventures soften doubled Metal. In relationships, small acts of vulnerability tend to deepen connection. Because they work so intensely, guarding rest is important. When their brilliance is matched with warmth, Metal Monkeys become exceptional leaders and loyal friends. For relationships, the classical structures belong to the animal rather than the element, so the Metal Monkey shares the Monkey's San He trine with the Rat and Dragon (the Water trine), its Liu He bond with the Snake, and its Liu Chong clash with the Tiger. The element adds a second layer: another Metal sign shares this year element, while partners whose year element feeds Metal in the generating cycle are often described as supportive. ## Metal Monkey years - [1980 (Metal Monkey)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/1980) - [2040 (Metal Monkey)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/2040) ## Frequently asked questions ### What years are Metal Monkey years? Between 1924 and 2044: 1980 (from February 16, 1980) and 2040 (from February 12, 2040). Each lasts until the day before the next Lunar New Year. ### What is the Metal Monkey's element relationship? The year element is Metal and the Monkey's fixed element is Metal; in the five-element cycles metal year element matches the fixed element. Readings use that relationship to describe how easily the two sides of the sign sit together. ### Which animals are most compatible with the Metal Monkey? Traditionally the Rat and Dragon (San He) and the Snake (Liu He). The Tiger is the Liu Chong clash. These pairings depend on the animal, whatever the element. ### What is the Metal Monkey called in the Chinese calendar? Geng-Shen. In almanacs and Four Pillars charts each year is named by its heavenly stem, here the Metal stem Geng, followed by its earthly branch, here Shen for the Monkey, so the name pins down both halves of the combination at once. ### How is the Metal Monkey different from other Monkeys? All Monkeys share ingenuity, humour and curiosity. The Metal year element changes the tone: metal is the element of autumn and harvest, and a Metal year is traditionally said to sharpen whatever animal it meets. ## Related pages - [Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/monkey) - [1980 (Metal Monkey)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/1980) - [2040 (Metal Monkey)](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/2040) - [Water Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/water-monkey) - [Wood Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/wood-monkey) - [Fire Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/fire-monkey) - [Earth Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/earth-monkey) - [Metal Horse](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/metal-horse) - [Metal Goat](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/metal-goat) - [Chinese zodiac years](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/years) - [Chinese zodiac calculator](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac-calculator) - [Monkey and Monkey](https://unifiedreading.com/chinese-zodiac/compatibility/monkey-and-monkey) ## About Unified Reading Unified Reading combines Pythagorean numerology, the Western Sun sign (Moon and rising with a birth time), the Chinese zodiac and life-stage context in one reading.
