In total Mercury moves backwards through Pisces, Aquarius, Cancer, Gemini, Scorpio and Libra this year. The shadow zone is the stretch of the zodiac the planet crosses three times: forward before the retrograde station, backwards during the period, then forward again after the direct station. In 2027 that span is 20°55′ Aquarius to 5°59′ Pisces and 27°28′ Gemini to 6°22′ Cancer and 19°19′ Libra to 4°56′ Scorpio. The pre-shadow begins when the planet first reaches the direct-station degree, before the retrograde station, and the post-shadow ends when it returns to the retrograde-station degree. The previous period ended on November 13, 2026 and the next begins on January 24, 2028. ## What Mercury retrograde traditionally means Mercury rules speech, writing, travel, trade and the small machinery of daily life, so its retrograde is the one most people have heard of. Three times a year, for about three weeks each, the planet appears to move backwards from Earth's point of view. Astrologers read these weeks as a time when messages cross, plans need a second look and things that were rushed come back for revision. The planet is not actually reversing; it is an effect of the two orbits, and the appearance is what the tradition works with. The usual advice is not to freeze but to slow down. Reread before you send, confirm the time and the place, keep a copy, and expect the past to resurface: an old friend, an unanswered email, a contract that was never quite settled. Astrologers often describe the retrograde as better for anything beginning with re, such as review, repair, reconnect and research, than for launching something brand new. Treat it as a reason to double-check, not as a reason to avoid living. ## What to review while Mercury is retrograde Back up your devices before the station, read contracts twice, confirm travel bookings and meeting times, keep receipts, and let a difficult conversation wait until you have slept on it. If a decision cannot wait, make it with more care rather than not at all. If your Sun, Moon or rising sign is Pisces, Aquarius, Cancer, Gemini, Scorpio and Libra, astrologers would say the period touches a personal point; the 2027 sign pages list the dates for each sign. Times are UTC, so a station near midnight can fall on the neighbouring date where you live. ## The 2027 astrology calendar - [2027 astrology calendar](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/2027) - [Mercury retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/mercury-retrograde-2027) - [Mars retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/mars-retrograde-2027) - [Jupiter retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/jupiter-retrograde-2027) - [Saturn retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/saturn-retrograde-2027) - [Uranus retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/uranus-retrograde-2027) - [Neptune retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/neptune-retrograde-2027) - [Pluto retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/pluto-retrograde-2027) - [Eclipses in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/eclipses-2027) - [New and full Moons in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/new-and-full-moons-2027) ## Every sign in 2027 - [Aries in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/aries) - [Taurus in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/taurus) - [Gemini in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/gemini) - [Cancer in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/cancer) - [Leo in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/leo) - [Virgo in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/virgo) - [Libra in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/libra) - [Scorpio in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/scorpio) - [Sagittarius in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/sagittarius) - [Capricorn in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/capricorn) - [Aquarius in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/aquarius) - [Pisces in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/2027/pisces) ## Frequently asked questions ### When is Mercury retrograde in 2027? No. The apparent reversal comes from Earth and Mercury moving at different speeds on their orbits, like a slower car seeming to slide backwards as you pass it. Astrology works with the appearance from Earth, and the dates here are computed from that geocentric view. ## Related pages - [2027 astrology calendar](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/2027) - [Mars retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/mars-retrograde-2027) - [Jupiter retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/jupiter-retrograde-2027) - [Saturn retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/saturn-retrograde-2027) - [Uranus retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/uranus-retrograde-2027) - [Neptune retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/neptune-retrograde-2027) - [Pluto retrograde 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/pluto-retrograde-2027) - [Eclipses in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/eclipses-2027) - [New and full Moons in 2027](https://unifiedreading.com/sky/new-and-full-moons-2027) - [Mercury](https://unifiedreading.com/astrology/mercury) - [Mercury in Pisces](https://unifiedreading.com/zodiac/mercury-in-pisces) - [Mercury in Aquarius](https://unifiedreading.com/zodiac/mercury-in-aquarius) ## About Unified Reading Unified Reading combines Pythagorean numerology, the Western Sun sign (Moon and rising with a birth time), the Chinese zodiac and life-stage context in one reading. The preview is free at https://unifiedreading.com/#details; the full reading is $4.99, paid once through Stripe, with no subscription. A fictional sample is at https://unifiedreading.com/sample. With a birth time and place it adds whole sign houses and the chart ruler; the reading does not calculate planetary aspects or transits to your chart (the computed astrology calendar at https://unifiedreading.com/sky lists each year's retrogrades, eclipses and Moon phases), and it is a framework for reflection, not a prediction.
