--- title: "Leo Decan 1: Personality, Dates and Sub-Ruler" description: "Leo decan 1 (July 23 to August 1): personality, love, work and growth, with the Sun as sub-ruler of the first ten degrees of Leo." canonical: https://unifiedreading.com/zodiac/leo-decan-1 last-updated: 2026-10-23 reviewed: false author: Unified Reading editorial --- # Leo Decan 1: Personality, Dates and Sub-Ruler In Western astrology, the first decan of Leo covers 0° to 9° of the sign, roughly July 23 to August 1, with the Sun as its sub-ruler, the sign's own planet. It is read as radiant self-expression and warm-hearted confidence at full strength. Decans are a traditional refinement of the Sun sign. ## Key facts | Fact | Value | | --- | --- | | Sign · decan | Leo · first decan | | Degrees | 0° – 9° Leo | | Typical dates | July 23 – August 1 | | Sub-ruler | Sun (from Leo) | | Leo's ruler | Sun | ## Leo decan 1 personality The Sun rules Leo and also co-rules its first decan, so the opening ten degrees of the Lion are usually read as Leo in its most luminous form. Self-expression is central. First-decan Leos are often described as warm, confident and creative, with a natural presence that draws attention without much effort. They tend to want their lives to mean something and to leave a personal mark. Generosity is strong; they often enjoy hosting, celebrating and lifting others' spirits. There is a childlike delight in play here, and a deep need to be appreciated for who they really are. The doubled solar influence can heighten pride as well as warmth. These natives may take criticism personally, because what they create feels like an extension of themselves. Loyalty runs deep, and so does a sense of dignity that can make them reluctant to admit mistakes. Traditional texts associate this decan with royalty and the heart, both literal and symbolic. In everyday terms it often appears as someone who brings energy and courage into any group they join. When they feel secure in their worth, their light becomes generous, encouraging others to shine as well. Few people are better at making a birthday, a launch or an ordinary Tuesday feel like an occasion. ## Leo decan 1 in love and at work First-decan Leos tend to love openly and wholeheartedly. They often enjoy romance in its classic forms: grand gestures, celebrations and plenty of affection. Admiration and loyalty matter greatly to them, and they usually give both generously in return. They may need reassurance more than they show. Feeling ignored or taken for granted can hurt deeply. A partner who appreciates their warmth, enjoys some drama and offers sincere praise tends to bring out their best. Learning to share the spotlight within the relationship deepens their bonds. At work, this decan often thrives in visible, creative or leadership roles. Performing arts, entertainment, teaching, management, entrepreneurship, design and brand-building can suit them well. They are often inspiring leaders who motivate through enthusiasm and personal example. Anonymous, purely behind-the-scenes work can feel unfulfilling. Recognition and creative autonomy keep them engaged. Their growth area is accepting feedback without feeling diminished, and listening to quieter colleagues whose ideas may deserve the stage as much as their own. A good creative brief and a little public thanks tend to draw extraordinary effort from them. ## Dates and sub-ruler of Leo decan 1: what the Sun adds The first decan covers 0° to 9° of Leo, which in most years means birthdays from July 23 to August 1. First decans take the sign's own ruler, so the Sun rules both the sign and this decan, which is why it is often called the purest expression of Leo. The other two decans of Leo belong to Jupiter (decan 2) and Mars (decan 3). Because decans are measured in degrees rather than days, the calendar dates drift by a day or so between years. The Sun brings warmth, pride and a need to be seen. Where it sub-rules, astrologers look for generosity, creative confidence and a wish to lead from the front, along with sensitivity to whether effort is noticed and appreciated. Solar decans are often linked with performance, visibility and a strong personal signature, and their usual lesson is to share the stage. Here the Sun doubles up with the sign's own ruler, so Leo's warmth, generosity, creative confidence and a big, loyal heart come through with little filtering. ## Growth for Leo decan 1 For first-decan Leos, growth often involves separating identity from outcome. Try viewing criticism as information about the work rather than a verdict on the self. Practise celebrating others' achievements genuinely, noticing how generosity returns. Creative play, done purely for joy, can refresh the spirit without the pressure of an audience. When pride resists apology, consider that admitting a mistake can be a powerful act of leadership. Their warmth is a real gift, and it grows stronger as it becomes less dependent on applause and more rooted in self-respect. Within Leo, decan 2 leans towards big-hearted generosity expanded by jupiter's optimism and vision and decan 3 leans towards bold, fiery courage that turns pride into decisive action. A decan is one layer of a chart among many, so the Moon, rising sign and houses can strengthen or soften everything described here. These notes work best as prompts for reflection: notice which lines ring true, which feel foreign, and what that contrast suggests. ## Birthdays in Leo decan 1 - [July 22](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-22) - [July 23](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-23) - [July 24](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-24) - [July 25](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-25) - [July 26](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-26) - [July 27](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-27) - [July 28](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-28) - [July 29](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-29) - [July 30](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-30) - [July 31](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/july-31) - [August 1](https://unifiedreading.com/birthday/august-1) ## Frequently asked questions ### What makes the first decan of Leo the most classic Leo?
