The 8th House in Astrology: Meaning, Planets and Whole Sign Houses
In Western astrology, the 8th house covers intimacy, shared money, debts, inheritance and deep change. It is associated with intimacy, shared resources, trust, loss, debt, inheritance and deep change. In whole sign houses, which Unified Reading uses, it is the 8th sign counted from the rising sign, so finding it needs a birth time and place.

What the 8th house means
The 8th house is the house of what is shared and what is hidden. Traditionally it covered death, fear and other people's money: inheritances, debts, a partner's income, taxes. Modern astrology adds intimacy, sexuality, psychological depth and the kind of change that cannot be undone. The common thread is merging. Whenever you combine resources, bodies or secrets with someone else, you give up some control, and this house describes how you handle that surrender. It does not predict loss or wealth. It describes how you relate to vulnerability, trust and the parts of life you cannot manage alone, however capable you are.
The 8th house tends to answer questions such as: How much do I let people see? How do I feel about owing, or being owed? What is my relationship with endings, including the end of a relationship or a version of myself? How do I handle jealousy and control? These are not comfortable questions, which is part of why the house is often read with care. Approached gently, it can describe real strength under pressure.
The 8th house in daily life
Ordinary life shows the 8th house in the joint account, the shared streaming password, the conversation about a will, the moment you decide whether to tell someone the truth about how you feel. It is there in how you handle a partner's money troubles and in your instinct, or reluctance, to dig beneath the surface of things. Most people have at least a few empty houses, and an empty 8th is no sign of a shallow inner life. The sign that occupies it and the house where that sign's ruler sits still describe your style of intimacy and trust. Without a planet there, these themes may surface mainly at turning points rather than colouring every week.
In relationships, the 8th house concerns intimacy, trust and shared resources, and the vulnerability that real closeness asks for. Questions of jealousy, sexuality and joint finances tend to surface here sooner or later. At work, the 8th house points to shared finances, research, investigation and crisis work, wherever stakes are high and discretion matters. Taxes, insurance, loans and other people's resources are all part of its practical territory.
The 8th house in whole sign houses
In whole sign houses each house is one whole sign, counted from the rising sign. The 8th house is the 8th sign in that count: Scorpio for Aries rising, Aquarius for Cancer rising, Taurus for Libra rising and Leo for Capricorn rising. Any planet in that sign at birth is in your 8th house. If none is, the house is read through the sign itself and the planet that rules it, which is normal: most charts leave several houses empty. The rising sign changes about every two hours, which is why a birth time and place are needed. Quadrant systems such as Placidus can put a planet near a sign boundary in a different house, so other software may disagree.
The 8th is a succedent house. A modern teaching convention pairs it with Scorpio, the 8th sign, and so with Mars and Pluto. Its opposite is the 2nd house, the area of money, possessions, earning, self-worth and what you value, and the two are often read as an axis.
Planets in the 8th house
Each planet brings its own function to the 8th house's affairs. In brief:

The Moon here is associated with deep, private feelings that seek trust, intensity and real intimacy. Mercury here is associated with a probing, private mind drawn to hidden motives and difficult conversations. Venus here is associated with intense, all-or-nothing love and a fascination with deep emotional bonds. Mars here is associated with intense desire, strong will in shared matters and courage in deep water. Jupiter here is associated with growth through intimacy, shared resources and the courage to go deep. Saturn here is associated with guarded intimacy, careful trust and a sober approach to shared resources. Uranus here is associated with sudden shifts in intimacy, shared money and the way upheaval reshapes you. Neptune here is associated with a hunger for transcendent intimacy and blurred lines around shared resources. Pluto here is associated with profound intensity around intimacy, shared resources, endings and regeneration.
Questions to ask about your 8th house
The 8th house covers shared depths: intimacy, other people's money, debts, inheritance and the changes that cannot be undone. A planet here colours how a person handles trust, merger and loss.
Trust is the currency of this house, so begin by asking who holds a key to your home, a password or a secret, and how you decided they deserved it. Other prompts: what do I find hard to forgive? When something ends, do I grieve, bolt or pretend nothing happened? How comfortable am I accepting gifts, loans or favours? Practical ways to work with the 8th include journaling about a past ending until its lesson becomes clear, having a candid conversation about joint arrangements before resentment builds, and clearing out possessions linked to an old chapter. Some people find ritual helpful: burning an old letter, or planting something in memory of a loss. Closeness deepens through gradual disclosure, so consider sharing one honest thing at a time rather than all or nothing.

Frequently asked questions
Is the 8th house about death?
Traditionally it was, and older texts read it that way. Modern astrologers mostly read it psychologically, as the house of endings, loss and renewal of every kind: the end of a relationship, a job or an old identity. It does not describe how or when anyone dies, and it is not read that way here.
Why is the 8th house linked with other people's money?
Because the 2nd house describes what is yours, and the 8th, counted as the second from the partner's 7th, describes what is theirs. That brings in joint finances, debts, loans, inheritance and anything held in trust. Underneath sits the real theme: how comfortable you are depending on others, and letting them depend on you.
Which sign is on my 8th house?
In whole sign houses it is the 8th sign counted from your rising sign: Scorpio for Aries rising, Pisces for Leo rising, Cancer for Sagittarius rising. Your rising sign needs your birth time and place.
